Project Nanda is a division of ConnieCaps, Inc., that supplies hand knit wristbands for children who are undergoing long-term hospital care. It’s my way of letting them know that there is always someone thinking of them, even from far away.
HOW IT STARTED
I do a knitting tutorial every weekday at 2:00 PM EST on a social media app called Periscope. (@ConnieCaps if you’d like to check it out) When I first started using it, my tutorials would include knitting a particular stitch on a swatch of fabric. One day, the universe intervened and a Periscope user named Nanda Ryen happened upon a tutorial while she was visiting a children’s hospital in Brazil. She showed the children the tutorial and they were amazed!
Periscope’s interactive nature allows viewers to communicate with the broadcaster in real-time via text. When Nanda commented on how much the children were enjoying the demo, I started to think of how I could use that enthusiasm to brighten their day.
#NANDABANDS ARE BORN
After Nanda’s fateful visit to the broadcast, I decided that instead of demonstrating knit patterns and techniques on fabric swatches, I’d do it on wristbands instead. This way, I could make something to send the children as a gift and a reminder that someone cares - a "functional, physical reminder" (thanks, Patrick!).
HOW YOU CAN HELP
- If you knit or crochet, you can make a wristband and send it to me to add to the packages I send to children's hospitals.
- If you don't knit or crochet you can either make a financial donation or a yarn donation.
- If you have anything you'd like to include in the packages I send, please mail to the address at the bottom of this page.
- If you know of a children's hospital that would like to receive a package, please let me know!
